Credit or else!

Is it possible to get by in the US without a credit card? I guess so, but only if you have enough dollars to stump up a hefty deposit instead for almost every utility. Without a job a social security number is impossible (although taxation works just fine); without an SSN a credit card is impossible; without a credit card, insurance is nigh impossible, getting a cellphone requires a $500 deposit, direct debits can’t be made from your bank account etc. etc.; and without a credit card you can’t easily build up a credit rating, which is crucial here. An utterly ridiculous and very dangerous situation has evolved, whereby people are encouraged to get credit and so be in debt (even if that’s for a short time before the credit is paid back, it’s still debt). I think the UK is heading this way too….
I’ll have to get by for the next two years without any of the above, so hopefully just by surviving here I might be able to prove this seemingly fixed system wrong!

I think you can struggle along without the credit card but the debit card is all but essential. I had never used one before I moved to CA 13 years ago but even children use them here!
